The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed that a member of its task force was shot during an anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The event took place on the Subinkurom-Kyeremasu route within the Dormaa Central Municipality.
In a statement released by the Lands Ministry on Tuesday, January 20, NAIMOS reported that armed attackers concealed in the bushes fired when they noticed the team, resulting in a gunfight.
A NAIMOS officer sustained a thigh injury and was promptly transported to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkuro, where he is now being treated and doing well.
In the course of the exchange, one of the assailants, known as Abuu Ibrahim, was shot and subsequently declared dead upon arrival at the same hospital.
NAIMOS stressed its dedication to persist in combating illegal mining despite persistent attacks and encouraged stakeholders to continue backing its efforts.
The Secretariat has assured the public of its commitment to combat illegal mining and safeguard the nation’s natural resources.
