Kennedy Agyapong lost the majority of votes in the recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary due to a mix of campaign errors and delegate defections, according to Mussa Dankwah, executive director of Global InfoAnalytics.
Kennedy Agyapong finished as the closest candidate, but Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious from the hotly contested primaries.
He stated in an interview with Peace FM’s morning program “Kokrokoo” that it was terrible for Ken Agyapong to label former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a “liar” in the closing days of the campaign.
Beyond the contentious statement, voter desertion also had a big impact on the result, Mussa Dankwa clarified.
“There were more defections from Kennedy Agyapong’s camp to Dr Bawumia’s camp than the other way around. Apart from that, the last-minute campaign gaffe, when he called Bawumia a liar, was an own goal” he stated.
“When you are running this kind of campaign, you must maintain discipline and avoid controversy in the last week or two. Delegates are humans; they have feelings and sensitivity, and they react. We saw the results of their reactions,” he added.
