The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has demanded the prompt annulment of the recent parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency and the disqualification of candidates identified as involved in vote buying.
In a statement released on Sunday, February 8, 2026, and signed by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the caucus noted the widely circulated claims of vote buying during the NDC primary conducted in the constituency.
The Majority Caucus vehemently denounced the purported actions, characterizing them as opposed to the party’s declared objective to revitalize Ghana’s politics and uphold integrity in the democratic system.
After thorough discussions, the caucus announced that its main and additional leadership had decided to officially convey two essential demands to the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC. These consist of the prompt cancellation of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary and a prohibition on any candidate involved in the election who is found to have taken part in vote buying from running in any rerun of the primary.
“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement said.
The Majority Caucus’s request came as a result from increased investigation of the Ayawaso East primary’s behavior, which has been clouded by claims of inducement and vote buying.
The NDC has formed a three-member committee to look into the claims. The chair of the committee is former Minister of Information, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, alongside members Mahama Ayariga and lawyer Emefa Fugah. The report is anticipated to be submitted by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The party stated that the investigation is part of its dedication to internal democracy, transparency, and ethical political behavior, and will also suggest sanctions and long-term reforms to prevent bribery in internal elections.
The debate escalated following reports that delegates at the primary purportedly received gifts such as 32-inch televisions and boiled eggs while voting. Pictures and reports of the supposed incentives spread extensively on social media, sparking public discussion and internal unrest within the party.
President John Dramani Mahama has recalled Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed from his role as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria due to similar allegations associated with the Ayawaso East primary.
