About 17 political parties’ names have been removed off Ghana’s political parties registration by the Electoral Commission.

The EC conducted a statewide effort to check the offices of all Ghanaian political parties that had been registered between May and June 2022.

However, following the exercise, the EC acted in accordance with Section 15(3)(c) of the Political Parties Act of 2000, Act 574, which requires it to revoke the registration of Political Parties that lack offices at the national and regional levels.

“The general public is hereby informed that the registration certificates of the underlisted political parties have been cancelled in accordance with Section 15 (3) (c) of the Political Parties Law, 2000 (Act 574) effective the 1st day of November 2022.”

Some of the impacted political parties opposed the revocation before it was implemented.

Following the notification to cancel the registration of 17 of them, the head of the United Progressive Party, Akwasi Addai Odike, accused the Electoral Commission of disrespecting minor parties.

“This lady, the chair of the electoral commission, has no regard for me as a person.

Never has this woman permitted me to meet her, not even when I want to talk to her about something,” claimed Mr. Odike in interview with media.
