Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s beleaguered finance minister, has apologized to the country’s citizens for the present economic difficulties.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Ofori-Atta said that the administration had no desire to subject Ghanaians to any kind of suffering. The ad hoc committee had been formed by the Speaker of Parliament to look into claims that would necessitate his removal from office as made by the Minority.
The current problem, according to the finance minister, was not brought on by the government’s carelessness but rather by the disastrous consequences of Covid-19.
“As the person, President AKufo-Addo has put in charge of this economy, I feel the pain personally, professionally and in my soul…I see and feel the terrible impact of rising prices of goods and services on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians, I feel the stress of running a business, but it is the strength and perseverance of the Ghanaian people that inspire me and my colleagues in government every morning”.
“That is what gives me the strength to press on and to find solutions and relief for Ghanaians to the myriad of problems that our country and the rest of the world are facing, especially since March 2020. Co-chairs, let me use this opportunity to say to the Ghanaian people what I believe, with courage, every finance minister around the world, may wish to say to their people now: ‘I am truly sorry”, Mr Ofori-Atta stated.
He continued by saying that despite the impacts of Covid-19, the government had worked to guarantee that Ghanaians had regular access to power, that the nation’s roads would continue to be fixed, and that government employees would always be paid on time.
The Minority in Parliament submitted a resolution for a vote of censure against Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, stating seven accusations against him, including conflict of interest, financial irresponsibility that caused the Ghana Cedi to collapse, and egregious economic mismanagement.
Prior to the hearing, the minister made a formal request for more information and greater details about the motion’s justifications, while also voicing concerns about the committee’s authority.
