The United Kingdom (UK) is interested in hiring skilled Ghanaian nurses, according to the health minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu.

He claims that there is an ongoing business relationship with the British government in exchange for payment.

The Dormaa Central lawmaker said the deal will be similar to a current one with Barbados, under which he claimed Ghanaian nurses are succeeding, during the 2023 Budget discussion in Parliament on Monday.

“We are engaging with the government of the United Kingdom, and we are just about to sign a memorandum of agreement after cabinet approval to begin to send nurses for training and work there and come back home after three years.

“Ghana is going to benefit from the little money that the UK government will pass on. For every single nurse that goes away, when we finish the agreement, it is likely we will get over 1000 pounds to come and support the health system in Ghana,” Hon Agyemang Manu stated on Monday.

Barbados acquired 200 more Ghanaian nurses in March of this year to help with the island nation’s personnel requirements.

In a speech, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Motley thanked the administration for providing assistance to the health sector of her nation.

2019 saw the signing of a contract between Ghana and Barbados for the recruitment of nurses from Ghana.

Over 100 Ghanaian nurses were initially hired as a result of the arrangement, which was signed at the Jubilee House when Mia Mottley made President Akufo-Addo a courtesy visit as part of her official tour to Ghana.

Some have urged that the nurses be integrated into Ghana’s Health Service, which has raised worries about the program.
