The recently elected General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, revealed that Johnson Asiedu Nketiah’s resignation was the only factor in his decision to run for the job.
The former Ketu South Member of Parliament gave this explanation: I am the type of person who supports persons I feel are appropriate for specific tasks, regardless if they come from a background.
But he thought it was time to step up and forward the work of that office in light of Asiedu Nketiah’s decision to resign from the General Secretaryship and run for the Chairmanship.
“For me, I think he had done a fantastic job as a General Secretary and if he was minded to continue, why not? I would have stayed behind to see how best we can help.
“But once it is that he indicated that he was not going to go again, I believed the soul of this party required a certain pedigree and I feel that by the very combination of the background that I have, I can actually step in there and hold it to the level and actually I believe that I can take it to the next level,” In an interview with Citi TV on December 19, he added.
He continued by drawing comparisons between his qualifications and Asiedu Nketiah’s, noting that both had previously held positions as stockbrokers and then as members of parliament.
To become general secretary, Fifi Kwetey defeated Peter Boamah Otokunor and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and to gain the chairperson, Asiedu Nketiah defeated three other candidates, including the previous chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
