Nothing, according to President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will make him reconsider his decision to complete building on the National Cathedral.
He said that in order to keep his promise to God, he will move on with its construction.
His remarks come in response to calls for him to cease work on the divisive project and focus instead on finding answers to the country’s current economic issues.
The president compared those who disagree with his plans for finishing the project to Sanballat and Tobias in the book of Nehemiah while delivering a speech at the centennial commemoration of the Ga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on December 18.
“Just like Sanballat and Tobias, in the days of Nehemiah, there are some who do not share my views on the building of the National Cathedral, I respect their right to differ but I am confident (of) my decision, by the vast numbers of enthusiastic supporters of this project whose spiritual dimension is limitless”.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the National Cathedral will represent the nation’s expression of thankfulness to God for preserving it from wars and diseases throughout history.
The National Cathedral will serve not only as the country’s collective thanksgiving to the Almighty for the blessings He has bestowed on our nation, sparing us the ravages of civil war that have bedevilled the histories of virtually all our neighbours and the outbreak of deadly mass epidemics.
The president said, “but also as a focal point for the whole Ghanaian Christian community, which accounts for over 70% of the population.”
In order to make Ghana better for everyone, President Akufo-Addo also appealed for their support.
On Sunday, he continued, “I need every Ghanaian’s support and the prayers of the church to assist me and my government effectively carry out our duty.
Sanballat and Tobias are noted as having opposed the Jews’ attempts to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls and done all in their power to detour them in Nehemiah 4, Chapter 4.
