On October 19, 2022, Dr. Nkansah was named acting director-general of the GES.

Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa was replaced by him because the administration deemed his services no longer necessary.

His nomination was contested by several teacher unions, notably the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), who urged the President to withdraw it.

Dr. Eric Nkansah has been confirmed as the Ghana Education Service’s official Director-General (GES).
