Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has almost been given the nod by National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah to win the forthcoming party primary for the Tamale South seat.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the four-term MP has grown to be so influential in his district that it would even be shocking if he is challenged in the next primary elections.
“The outgone Minority Leader, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, he is so powerful in his constituency, he is almost always not contested at all. I have my doubts whether anybody will contest him,” At a meeting in London last week, Asiedu Nketiah informed party supporters.
The former General Secretary was responding to worries that some of the replacement leaders in the upcoming primaries might be impacted by the changes made to the party’s leadership in Parliament on January 23.
They won’t be affected by the changes, he said, since Dr. Avedzi, the previous deputy minority leader who was removed, won’t be returning to Parliament.
Asiedu Nketiah commented on the situation involving Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak and said that despite the recent difficulties he had had, “we didn’t think that this change will damage his fortune one way or the other and so we decided now is the ideal moment to execute these adjustments.”
He emphasized that the benefits of the trip exceeded any timing-related issues.
With the selection of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as the new Minority Leader, the NDC has changed the composition of its parliamentary leadership.
Haruna Iddrisu is replaced by Enyan Essiam, a former member of the Parliament’s Finance Committee and representative for Ajumako.
Kofi Armah Buah, the MP for Ellembele and newly appointed Deputy Minority Leader, will support Dr. Ato Forson.
In his stead, James Kutse Avedzi is replaced.
The Party has also named Kwame Agbodza, an Adaklu MP, as the next Minority Chief Whip.
Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase, is replaced by him.
As assistant Minority Whips, Ahmed Ibrahim and Comfort Doyoe Ghansah remained in their positions.
