The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to choose a date for its presidential and parliamentary primaries ended without reaching a decision.
The President, Vice President, Chief of Staff, certain Members of Parliament, and potential presidential candidates were present at yesterday’s meeting [Thursday, February 2, 2023], which
was scheduled to officially establish a date for the two remaining elections on the party’s calendar.
Additionally, a date for the start of nominations for both elections was to be produced.
Already, factions within the party are calling for an early congress, while others prefer that the party adhere to its charter and choose a flagbearer 12 months before a significant election.
The highly anticipated meeting was supposed to take place on January 31, but several Council members were absent, therefore it was moved forward to today.
According to reports from the Council, the party has set November 2023 for the election of its presidential candidate, January 2024 for the election of parliamentary candidates for districts where NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) are currently in office, and April 2024 for districts where there are no NPP MPs currently in office.
Alan Kyerematen, a former trade and industry minister, has expressed his desire to run for the NPP’s flagbearer position.
Dr. Akoto Afriyie, a former minister of agriculture, and Boakye Agyarko, a former minister of energy, have both announced their desire to run against him.
Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former member of parliament for the Mampong Constituency, has declared his desire to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership when nominations are opened on Wednesday, February 1.
The former lawmaker said that early analysis carried out by his staff, together with counsel from certain party elders, pushed him to come on board his expert knowledge and ideals to maintain political power.
