In order to officially notify him of the Black Stars player’s passing, the family of the late Christian Atsu Tswasam contacted the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Mustapha Ussif, on Friday morning.

Arrangements for the player’s burial were also discussed during the meeting.

On Monday, February 6, Atsu tragically perished during the devastating earthquake that struck Southern Turkey, where he performs.

The Minister described the events leading up to the death of the Ghanaian football player who was living in Turkey and the futile attempt to keep him alive, adding that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo played a key role in getting the deceased footballer’s body transported to Ghana so that he could receive a respectable funeral.

Mr. Ussif sent his sympathies to the player’s family and the Ghana Football Association for the sad loss of a gifted player, and he stressed the need for the family to have the chance to collaborate with the government to provide the player with a proper state funeral.

The Minister emphasized that with Atsu’s charitable efforts toward the less fortunate in society  “life is not about how long one lives but the quality and impact that one makes in the lives of others especially the vulnerable in the society.”

The Minister claims that Atsu’s testimonials and accolades from Ghana and other places offer him hope that the late player had a meaningful existence.

The player’s family’s chief of household, Nene Gabriel Kofi Tswasam, thanked the Minister and stated that “this is a tragic moment for all Ghanaians but I have a belief that God takes his own when he deems it.”

In order to decide on an appropriate date for the late Atsu’s burial, it was decided that a meeting would be conducted with the President of the Republic of Ghana on Monday, February 27, 2023.

Alhaji Hafiz Adam, the Chief Director of the Ministry, greeted the family and stated that Christian Atsu’s passing was a disaster for all Ghanaians because of his commitment to and part in the growth of football.

In addition to expressing his sympathies, he said that the Ministry was prepared to work with the family to make sure that the late football player is offered a respectable funeral.
