On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the 2023 State of the Nation’s Address (SoNA) in front of lawmakers.
Watching John Dramani Mahama with Akufo-Addo was one of the SoNA’s most notable events.
The two men will be seen together for the first time in public at this moment.
The meeting between Mahama and Akufo-Addo at Parliament was documented by the Ghanatodayonline.com crew stationed there.
The two men were seen holding hands and grinning widely as they said their goodbyes.
In the meantime, over the past few days, former president Mahama has been criticizing President Akufo-Addo and his administration for the nation’s present fiscal woes.
The State of the Nation Address is given in accordance with Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which says that the President must address Parliament with a statement regarding the SONA at the beginning of each session and before it is dissolved.
SONA is a legally required and annual custom in which the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghanaian Armed Forces provides an update on the state of the nation, reveals the government’s plan for the following year, and makes legislative proposals to Parliament.
Representatives of Parliament (MPs), the Speaker of Parliament, and the judiciary are required to accept the President’s SONA under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, Article 67.
