According to reports, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) permission to look into claims made by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng about the participation of some staff members at the presidency in illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).

Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former minister of environment, science, and technology, discussed this threat in an interview with GBC and said that government agents were responsible for the activities of illegal miners (galamseyers) in the nation.

The eminent surgeon claims that in order to maintain the operations of these illegal miners, these officials invest enormous sums of money into the scheme and purchase excavators and other equipment for them.

The comment from Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is in response to claims that 500 seized excavators from unlicensed miners were missing in 2020.
He characterized the reports as untrue and an effort by some members of the administration to remove him from his position as environment minister at the time.

“Let me tell you that I did not take one excavator for anything; they know the truth. Now things are coming up; we know those who are behind it and the party people who are there; people in government, including Jubilee House, who are doing galamsey and so on, even now,” he said.

“There was an orchestrated scheme, even within the party and government, to get me out. Why is it that when I left, now everyone is in the forest?” Prof stated.

The president has reportedly ordered an investigation in response to the former minister’s accusation, the Daily Graphic said.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), according to the report, is in charge of the investigation.
