The death of the member of parliament for the Ashanti region’s Kumawu constituency has been officially reported to the head of the Electoral Commission, according to Speaker of the House Alban S.K Bagbin.
This indicates that the position has been declared vacant in anticipation of a byelection that the EC must hold in the constituency within 90 days.
At the age of 53, Philip Atta Basoah, the Kumawu representative for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away early on March 28.
Last Friday, during a crucial vote to confirm President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo’s nominees for ministerial positions, the deceased MP was one of the three absentee MPs.
The late Kumawu Member of Parliament (MP) was discovered unconscious in his room on March 24 and transported to the hospital, where he passed away four days later, according to Solomon Basoah, the deceased’s brother.
The Speaker of the House remarked, “We formally reported to the head of the Electoral Commission of this terrible demise of our colleague which has resulted in the occurrence of a vacancy in the House,” in his remarks on the House floor.
In compliance with Section 3 of the Republic of Ghana Amendment Act 1996 ACT 52, the clerk of parliament sent the official communication to the EC on March 31.
