The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the leadership of the Bank of Ghana have been thanked by the Board, Management, and staff of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for their contributions to the purchase and installation of a catheterization laboratory at the top medical facility in the country.
The Bank of Ghana purchased and funded the one million dollar ($1m) lab, the most sophisticated cath lab in the nation, along with the Big Detector, dyna CT, roadmap software, and 3D workstation that are necessary for achieving accurate and effective minimally invasive treatments, following an appeal by the Vice President for the Bank to consider funding the acquisition of such a necessary piece of medical equipment as part of its corporate social responsibility.
According to representatives of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana is currently the only nation in the West African region to provide cutting-edge minimally invasive endovascular treatments (brain surgeries performed without cutting the skull), and the purchase of this Lab is anticipated to decrease the number of patients who are sent abroad for additional examinations and treatments.
By making investments in such cutting-edge healthcare facilities, Ghana may also boost the education of local physicians and raise the standard of patient care while attracting and retaining highly qualified medical personnel.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Lab in Accra on Tuesday, 25 April 2023 the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, said Management of the hospital has been working assiduously to acquire, maintain and improve upon existing facilities, with investments into various aspects of the healthcare space through strategic partnerships.
“This investment by the Bank of Ghana in sponsoring the full cost of the Catherization Lab is a case in point. Thank you so much Bank of Ghana. This will greatly enhance our capabilities to provide cardiac catherization, stenting for various conditions and emergency treatment of strokes and thromboembolic phenomena and other life-saving interventions.
Dr. Ampomah described Dr. Bawumia as “a friend of Korle Bu” and recalled the crucial role the Vice President had played, from persuading the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to consider the purchase of the Catherization Lab as a necessary item that might be covered by the Bank’s Social Responsibility obligations to today’s commissioning. “Your Excellency, Korle Bu Hospital is indeed very grateful to you for your advocacy and personal interest which has brought the project to reality.”
Vice President Bawumia gave a speech at the event and urged hospitals and other medical facilities all throughout the nation to work with the private sector to provide and maintain necessary equipment so that the facilities could serve patients with the best treatment possible.
