Former trade and industry minister Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who is running for the leadership position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for a change in leadership in Ghana in order to bring the populace together for development and prosperity.
Ghana’s politics are so divisive that the nation is unable to speak with a unified voice on the pressing issues facing it.
At the start of his visit of the area, Hon. Kyerematen addressed the Western Regional House of Chiefs (WRHC) in Sekondi last Friday. He stated, “We need a leader who would bring the nation together, regardless of the party in power, since without unity there cannot be growth.
“We need a leader we can trust, and I am sacrificing myself as that leader, to bring this nation to a common objective and destiny. The development that we desire as a people to push Ghana forward, can only come about if we stick together, irrespective of our party affiliations”, the NPP Presidential hopeful said.
Popularly known as Alan Cash, Hon. Kyerematen took use of the opportunity to officially inform Nananom that he is vying for the position of president as Nana Akufo-Addo, who is now in office, is required by constitutional law to resign after serving two full terms and eight years.
Although the constitution forbids chiefs from directly participating in politics, Hon. Kyerematen claimed that he still believed it prudent to enlist their wise guidance and support for his endeavor.
He continued, “I realize you aren’t party delegates and don’t vote, but you can persuade the delegates in your area to vote the right way.
The aspiring NPP presidential candidate spoke about the legal role Chiefs play in local governance, saying, “we can not have a proper decentralized system of government without incorporating a bigger role for the Chiefs since their tenure transcends any political office and their influence and experience needed to be tapped into for the benefit of all.”
Regarding Ghana’s decision to join the IMF, Hon. Kyerematen noted that the region’s contribution to the country’s overall development could not be overstated and, if properly tapped, might aid in finding solutions to many of the issues we face.
Speaking on behalf of the House, Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, Omanhene of Nsein, commended the candidate for exhibiting what he called “good character” by visiting Nananom at the start of his tour of the area.
To the cheers of the House, he remarked, “You have shown a character that you will not leave out Chiefs in your government, and I pray your dream comes true.”
Awulae Agyefi Kwamen II took the opportunity to draw attention to the underrepresentation of the area in the cabinet and expressed hope that Kyerematen will remedy the situation if given the chance.
