On May 2, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, promises to provide Ghanaians an update on the condition of the nation’s forest reserves.
Speaking to the media at the National Youth Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Governance, Mr. Jinapor advised that in order to successfully combat illegal mining and other environmental malpractices, the government and stakeholders need to remain focused despite potential setbacks and avoid assigning blame.
“On May 2, I am leading the Forestry Commission to brief the country on the state of forest reserves in Ghana and give a full update on the state of our forest reserves.”
According to Mr. Jinapor, “some of the measures we are putting in place will have to be continued, there will be setbacks, but the most important thing in this matter is for us to be focused.”
He persuaded the youth even more to express an interest in environmental stewardship.
The government owes the Plantation Developers and Seedlings Contractors Association GH28 million for seedlings they supplied in 2021 and 2022 for the national tree planting operation. Association members have threatened legal action against the government.
The 2023 Green Ghana Project has budgeted GH 2.5 million for this year’s planting effort, which its chairman, Benito Owusu-Bio stated is grossly insufficient despite these requests and threats.
