The resolution of the protracted tribal violence in Bawku, in the Upper East Region, has once again been emphasized by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as being the greatest priority of the administration in terms of national security.
He claimed that urgent attempts had been made to ensure a long-lasting end to the battle, which has since claimed a number of lives.
President Akufo-Addo stated that nothing would make him happier as his presidency comes to an end next year than to see an end to the conflict in the border town in response to a request made by the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) at this year’s May Day celebrations held in Bolgatanga, which is in the same Region as Bawku.
“Nothing will give me greater pleasure in the concluding days of my presidency than to help bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he told the gathering of workers on Monday, May 1.
“May God grant me the wisdom to achieve that outcome.”
Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the TUC, had asked the President for a guarantee that the government will move quickly to address the crisis.
But the President claims that the matter is the top concern in terms of national security.
Recall that during his first term, President Akufo-Addo brought the Abudus and the Andanis together and supervised the end of the protracted Dagbon dispute.
According to him, Bawku’s security deployment has been improved, and those responsible for local law and order violations are also being held accountable.
He also cautioned those who were using war rhetoric as a ruse to undermine the stability and security of this nation that they would face resistance from the majority of Ghanaians who support democracy.
