Covid-19 is no longer considered a worldwide health emergency, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which is a crucial step towards the pandemic’s ending.

Over 6.9 million people have died as a result of this virus, which has also disrupted the international economy and wreaked havoc on communities.

The Director-General should cease the status of the public health emergency of worldwide significance, which draws attention to a health hazard globally and fosters cooperation on vaccinations and treatments. This recommendation comes from the WHO’s Emergency Committee.

The WHO has warned that Covid-19 is still a threat to world health, and the virus will continue to exist even after the emergency status is lifted, despite the fact that this action is an indication of progress in these areas.

According to WHO data, the death rate significantly dropped from its peak of more than 100,000 weekly deaths in January 2021 to just over 3,500 weekly deaths by April 24, 2023.

Despite these gains, Covid-19 continues to be a global health danger, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Although it started using the term for Covid in March 2020, the WHO does not proclaim the start or end of pandemics.

“Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I’ve accepted that advice. It’s therefore with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, stated.

Some nations, like the US, have begun to end their domestic Covid state of emergency, which implies they will stop paying for things like immunizations.
