The two people who allegedly attacked Abubakari Sadiq, a presenter at Dagbon FM in Tamale, while he was hosting a show at the station on May 3, 2023, have been detained by the police as of today, May 8, 2023.
When the police arrived at the scene after the incident, the suspects had already fled.
According to a statement from the Police, video evidence of the incident was obtained to help in the investigation.
Iddrisu Hardi alias Pagaaza and Mumuni Osman, the suspects, are being held in support of the investigation and will be brought before the court, the statement added.
On May 3, 2023, which also happened to be World Press Freedom Day, Mr. Iddrisu Hardi Pagazaa, a former deputy northern regional communications officer of the NDC, and Mumuni Osman were accused of breaking into the studios of Dagbon FM in the Northern Region in order to attack and assault Abubakar Sadiq Gariba, the host of an evening political talk show on Dagbon102.5 FM in the Northern Region, which is owned by the Class Media Group.
Between 8:30 and 9 o’clock that night, there was a live on-air attack.
According to Sadiq Gariba, who described what happened, the incident came after he had denounced on his show the how some politicians including his attacker had taken advantage of the Abudu-Andani chieftaincy conflict in Dagbon.
He claimed that the person who attacked him, who is thought to be a member of Sagnarigu MP A.B.A. Fuseini’s campaign staff, had previously commented on another radio station that “I should be the last person to advise him on communication because my communication can be compared to that of his daughter.”
On May 3, 2023, a radio host named Abubakari Sadiq Gariba was violently assaulted while doing a live broadcast.
On a political campaign platform, he reportedly criticized one of them during a conversation about the confrontation between Abudu and Andani.
Numerous institutions have demanded the two’s arrest and prosecution in the wake of the sad tragedy.
The Information Ministry was one of the organizations, and it was harshly chastised.
It condemned the assault on the broadcaster as wholly unacceptable and emphasized the need to safeguard journalists and make sure they can do their jobs without being threatened with violence or intimidation.
