According to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, raw bauxite and iron ore would soon no longer be exported from Ghana.
On Thursday, May 11, 2023, in Accra, Ghana, President Akufo-Addo delivered remarks at the beginning of a stakeholder’s conversation on natural resource management. The event was organized by the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
On the exploitation, utilization, and management of essential minerals in Ghana, he said that the relevant legislation and policy documents were currently being finalized.
As decision-makers and stakeholders assemble in Accra today for the first dialogue on natural resource management, maintaining the value chain for minerals, ensuring stricter enforcement of laws to combat illegal activities in the mining and forest sectors, as well as removing obstacles to efficient land administration, are at the forefront of the discussion.
In order to start the conversation, President Akufo-Addo announced that the policy document on the exploitation, utilization, and management of critical minerals in Ghana, which is currently being finalized by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, will be presented to Cabinet for “consideration in the next few weeks.”
“I assure you that we will do whatever it takes to ensure that the exploitation and utilisation of these green minerals are done not only in an environmentally sound manner, but also in a way that ensures optimum benefit to the people of Ghana,” the president said.
“This, we will never compromise,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources is authorized to issue regulations to ensure that no bauxite or iron ore in their raw state is exported outside of the country after five years of the effective date of Section 28 of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) law and Section 30 of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) law.
“With the policies and actions, we are implementing, we want to apply these legal requirements, and shortly, bauxite and iron ore will no longer be exported from the Ghana in their unprocessed state.
