At the Korle Teye, in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region, an illegal mining trench in which they were employed collapsed on them, leaving seven people reported dead.
As time runs out, some 17 more people are trapped beneath debris; villagers are assisting with rescue efforts by using everything they can get their hands on.
Only two of the trapped miners had been retrieved alive, albeit with injuries, according to Adom News correspondent Akwasi Dwamena, who visited the scene and observed the disorganized rescue efforts. The other seven dead bodies had been left out in the open, only partially hidden by bushes.
The journalists’ team was hurried away by the miners when they attempted to stop them from photographing the incident.
