According to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), preliminary investigations indicate that driver weariness was the primary factor in the accident that happened at Gomoa Okyereko in the Central Region on Tuesday morning and resulted in the deaths of 16 people and the severe injuries of more than 25 others.
A petroleum tanker thought to be owned by Goodness Energy and a fully occupied Yutong bus headed toward Accra were both involved in the disaster.
Ghanatodayonline.com has learned that the driver of the Yutong bus was dozing off during the trip, and that when he arrived in Gomoa Okyereko, he drove into the opposing lane, striking the fuel tanker.
While the injured are receiving care at the same facility, the bodies of all 16 deceased people have been deposited at the Winneba Specialist and Trauma Hospital Mortuary.
The Central Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority, Linda Afottey Anang, commented on the accident in an interview with Ghanatodayonline.com and urged the government to dualize the main routes in the nation to solve road carnage.
The dualization of the road is one thing we support. There will be an engineering problem there because we frequently have head-on crashes at Gomoa Okyereko. For head-on collisions, dualizing the roads is necessary in order to reduce collisions where the head-on crashes are occurring.
Gomoa Okyereko has been named by the National Road Safety Authority and the Ghana Police Service as one of the most accident-prone sections on the Accra to Cape Coast Highway, and drivers have been urged to exercise extreme caution in that region.
