Due to a recent approval of an increase in tariffs by the Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURC), Ghana’s consumers of water and electricity will see their prices rise as of today, June 1, 2023.

While water rates will climb by 19%, the price of energy will rise by 18.36%. The growing production costs are to blame for these adjustments.

In an interview with media on May 31, 2023, Alhaji Abubakari Jabari, the regional director of operations for the PURC, indicated that consumers who pay their bills on June 1, 2023, will still be taxed based on the previous rates.

He explained that the majority of water bills, for instance, will continue to utilize the old rate up to June’s consumption, at which point the new rate will be put into effect.

Up until the end of the month, any credit deposits made by clients will be computed using the old rate. Thereafter, the new rate will be used for following billing cycles.

Alhaji Abubakari Jabari addressed worries about acquiring credit at the beginning of the month and cautioned against acting irrationally or hurriedly to get credits to avoid the effects of the tariff adjustment.

He pointed out that it’s just a preconception that people buy credits early in the month in order to perhaps receive discounts.

He stressed that since the operational procedures don’t offer any advantages based on timing, buying credit at any point during the month is similar to doing so on the first day or week.

In an effort to lessen the effects of the tariff change, Alhaji Abubakari Jabari asked customers not to stand in line or rush to buy credits today.

He assured them that purchasing credits later in the month would not result in their losing out on any potential advantages.

Furthermore, regardless of the date of purchase, the billing computation will precisely reflect consumers’ consumption, so customers need not worry about slipping into a particular usage category.
