The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Rt, Hon, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin says Parliament will take immediate action to ensure the scrapping of the law that imposes tax on sanitary pads and is cardinal sin to tax sanitary pads.

Alban Bagbin raised concerns over the issue when he acknowledged reciept of a petition presented by a group calling itself ‘Socialist Movement of Ghana’ to remove taxes on sanitary pads.

Due to the Ghana Revenue Authority’s classification of sanitary pads as a luxury good, there is a 20 percent levy.

However, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin stated on the floor of the parliament that the house shouldn’t have initially permitted the sanitary pad tax to be passed due to its adverse effects.

The minister in charge must not be proposing such an inhumane fee to take it off, and it must not be included in the next budget, he added. Due to the seriousness of the situation, I have to delay my session in order to attend to the petitioners. I will also take quick measures to stop it.

A number of CSOs gathered around Parliament in an effort to get the government to stop taxing sanitary pads.

According to the group, the price of sanitary pads has increased due to the 12.5 percent VAT and the 20 percent import tax, making it hard for women, who make up 51% of Ghana’s population, to afford them.

Ama Pratt, the group’s spokesperson, stated in a statement to press that they will continue to push for the government to abolish the levies.
