According to the Ministry of Education, GH 241 million has been released for the payment of allowances for teacher candidates across the nation.

The Ministry also disclosed that GH32 million has been set aside for the first round of book and research allowance payments to be made to qualified senior members of public tertiary institutions nationwide.

At the 13th congregation of the Koforidua Asokore SDA Training College, Professor Yara Dzakadzie, the director of tertiary education at the Ministry, announced this in an address on behalf of the sector minister.

“It will interest the members of staff to know that the government has processed an amount of over GH¢32 million for the first batch of book and research allowance payable to senior members of tertiary institutions across the country.”

“The government is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the smooth running of our colleges of education, and it is committed to providing our students with the best education. In light of this, the government has released an amount of GH¢241 million for the payment of teacher trainee allowances across the country.”

The teacher trainees have not been paid the monies due them since the beginning of the academic year in January, leaving a number of them in distress.

According to the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), their members have shown restraint over their government’s five-month unpaid allowances for far too long.

Teacher trainees at the 46 Colleges of Education have not yet received their monies, despite the government having announced the availability of almost GH241 million for the payment of the allowances.

Five weeks after the announcement, the Association claims that the Ministry of Finance has not made the monies available to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for payout.
