National Ambulance Service staff have reported that a major fire outbreak at Adum, in the center of Kumasi’s Central Business District, left nine people injured and dozens traumatized.
Early on Friday, March 21, the fire broke out, destroying a number of stores and buildings.
It was said that the crowded Adum Market was the cause of the fire, which spread quickly.
Due to restricted access, Ashanti Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Peter Tetteh observed that firefighters found it difficult to move throughout the area.
In order to avoid more losses, anxious store owners quickly moved their possessions as the fire spread.
After the fire was put out, Sommik Duut Millon, the National Ambulance Service’s Ashanti Regional Manager, told media that several victims experienced panic attacks and were sent to local hospitals for treatment.
“We attended to many casualties. In fire outbreaks, it is common for people to experience panic attacks, and those involved in firefighting efforts can also sustain injuries. We treated about three firefighters who were injured and transported them to the Manhyia and Komfo Anokye hospitals.
We also helped victims who experienced panic attacks, some of whom were traumatized. Approximately nine casualties were handled by us, who treated them before transferring them to the hospital. The victims are responding well to treatment, according to hospital reports thus far, and several have already been released,” he said.
