Critical issues regarding Ghana’s energy sector challenges were addressed by Abena Osei-Asare, the minister of state-designate for the Finance Ministry, during her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on March 13, 2024.
Unpaid bills and unauthorized meter connections were the two main causes of the sporadic power supply problems, or “Dumsor,” according to Osei-Asare.
She urged Ghanaians to abstain from illegal acts that worsen the situation, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility.
Ms. Osei-Asare emphasized the necessity of quick payment by energy consumers, pointing out the large financial losses experienced by the energy Company of Ghana (ECG) as a result of unpaid bills and unlawful activities.
She underlined that supporting the stability and prosperity of energy organizations requires meeting financial obligations.
Given that an energy sector reform plan would soon be implemented, Ms. Osei-Asare expressed confidence about possible changes in the energy industry.
She emphasized stakeholder collaboration and technical assistance from organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the development of this plan.
In response to more questions, Ms. Osei-Asare said, “Yes, it is a big issue in the energy space, but we also have to do our part… In as much as government is doing its part, we as citizens will also have to change our attitudes towards these things and that is the only way together, we can succeed and address these issues.”
