John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, has issued a noteworthy declaration expressing his acceptance of the outcome of the 2024 election.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Africa’s Thomas Naadi, Mahama underlined that the election’s fairness and transparency will determine whether or not he accepted the results.
In response to a question on whether he would accept the election results no matter what, Mr. Mahama said, “If on the election day there is widespread ballot snatching and beating of people, and the military moving and intimidate people, and shoot people and tugs are all over the place, rampaging, you want me to accept that result, it will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process.”
The general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, in Ghana are expected to be a turning point in the nation’s democratic development. With all 275 legislative seats up for grabs, the elections will choose the next president and members of Parliament. At the time of the elections, Ghana is dealing with serious economic issues, such as high unemployment and inflation rates.
The NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the two major political parties, are engaged in a heated struggle for control. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s candidate, is running on the platform “It is possible,” emphasizing economic diversification and digitization. A 24-hour economy and more robust anti-corruption measures, including putting the auditor general’s report’s recommendations into practice, are among the initiatives Mahama is promoting in the interim.
