Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, a well-known figure in Ghanaian media, was released after his arrest by security forces provoked widespread outrage, especially among opposition leaders and proponents of press freedom.
On Wednesday, March 19, the host of “For the Records” was arrested under suspicious circumstances; the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemned the action as an attack on democracy.
Concerns regarding political intolerance and Ghana’s dwindling room for free expression were heightened by Afrifa Mensah’s detention.
His immediate release was demanded by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, who characterized the detention as a danger to free expression.
He later thank the patriots for their solidarity and unwavering commitment to freedom and democracy for the release of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Effutu MP and minority leader, also denounced the move and cautioned against intimidating government critics using state security.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin visited Dr. Ernest Addison, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, after National Security agents raided his home.
Heavily armed agents reportedly broke into his Roman Ridge home, turned off the CCTV, and searched the area extensively in an apparent attempt to find secret vaults.
