Ghana is in danger of losing the Africa Cup of Nations competition at the group stage after their most recent Group B match ended in a 2-2 draw with Mozambique.
For much of the game, it looked like the Black Stars were winning. However, in the 91st minute, the Mambas pulled one back thanks to a penalty given by substitute Andre Ayew. Four minutes later, the Mambas equalized through a corner, which was given when Richard Ofori touched the ball that seemed to be heading out.
Ghana now sits third in Group B with just two points from their three games thus far. They drew 2-2 with Egypt in their second game and lost 2-1 to Cape Verde in their first.
Though they have very little chance of qualifying, the Black Stars are undoubtedly down right now, they are technically still in the running.
At this competition, the top four teams will advance to the round of 16. The host country, Côte d’Ivoire, finished third with three points, and Namibia is currently ranked third in its group with three points. As a result, both teams are currently ahead of the Black Stars in the standings for fourth place teams that will advance.
There are now just two options available for the Black Stars to qualify.
Currently, Algeria (2 points), Zambia (2 points), Ghana (2 points), and Cameroon (1 point) are vying for those two spots. Ghana has completed their schedule of games, leaving the other three teams with one game remaining.
Thus, for Ghana to advance, Cameroon cannot defeat The Gambia, Algeria must also lose to Tanzania, and Zambia must lose to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In that case, Cameroon will draw to get up to two points, Algeria will stay at two points, and Zambia will stay at two points.
After that, it will come down to Goal Difference. At the moment, Cameroon has a GD of -2, Zambia and Algeria have 0 and the Black Stars have -1.
Therefore, before Ghana can sneak through, one of Algeria and Zambia must lose by at least two goals in order to tip the balance of distribution in favor of the Black Stars. Of course, all the other teams must also lose.
Yes, I am aware that the math is difficult and confusing, and you have most likely already given up.
Even though the chance is currently 0.0001, it is still your responsibility to be informed of it.
