To start residential camping in advance of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Black Stars have arrived in Kumasi.

The team had originally intended to camp in Johannesburg, South Africa, but that decision was changed in response to public outcry over the tournament’s location.

Approximately fourteen players showed up at the Kumasi International Airport in the evening of Monday, January 1, prepared to begin camping. Along with other players like Salis Abdul Samed, Gideon Mensah, and Ernest Nuamah, they were captained by Andre Ayew.

It is anticipated that Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew Inaki Williams, and other players included in the final squad will eventually join the Black Stars.

Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique have been drawn into Group B of the competition, which also includes Black Stars. On Sunday, January 14, 2024, the Black Stars will play their first game in the quest for a fifth trophy against Cape Verde. The group stage matches will then be played against Egypt and Mozambique.

With the team’s arrival in Kumasi, a rigorous preparatory period for the AFCON officially begins. To hone their abilities and strengthen team chemistry, the players will participate in one friendly match against Namibia in addition to intense training sessions.

During this time, the coaching staff—headed by coach Chris Hughton—will also evaluate the players’ level of fitness and plan their approach to the competition.
