On Tuesday, Federal Capital Territory apartments, a plot of land, and a national award the Member of the Order of the Niger, MON were given to the Super Eagles of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu.
At the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu made the announcement while hosting players and officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, led the delegation.
The Super Eagles placed second in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which was hosted by the gold-winning Côte d’Ivoire.
Alex Iwobi, who had been the target of cyberattacks after Nigeria’s semifinal loss to Cote d’Ivoire, was among the team members wearing green uniforms and officials in attendance.
President Tinubu praised the team, the coach, the crew, and the entire management team for their hard work, diligence, and sacrifice to get this far in the tournament. He acknowledged the obstacles they continuously overcame with steadily improving performance as they advanced to the finals. The statement was released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
With an emphasis on our grit, rigor, and determination on the field of play, we won a great victory in the hearts of Africa and the world, the President had urged Nigerians to be cheerful.
“Let this passing event not dispirit us but bring us together to work harder. We are a great nation bound as one by the green-white-green banner of resilience, joy, hope, duty, and untiring love.
“To those cherished Nigerian youths expressing their gifts in communities, drawing lines in the sand as they play football in their humble rectangles of play, you can be our heroes tomorrow, do not relent in your pursuit. My administration is here to make dreams come true,” the president stated.
