Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader of the 8th Parliament, has praised Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, for leading a strong and tough opposition caucus.

He made these comments in his farewell speech to the House before the 8th Parliament was dissolved.

As she reflected on their exchanges, Afenyo-Markin related stories that demonstrated how firm Dr. Forson’s leadership was.

“Mr Speaker, Ato Forson will talk to you nicely but will call you at 5 am and say, ‘Kwamena, no deal.

The political committee of our party has opposed it,’” he recalled, demonstrating the Minority’s resolute position on important issues.

Dealing with the Minority was a difficult undertaking, the Majority Leader acknowledged.

“Mr Speaker, the Minority were such a tough, stubborn, and difficult group.

You could never have an agreement with them because they were sneering power, and I understand,” he said, recognizing the gravity of the political situation.

Afenyo-Markin’s comments highlighted a level of respect between the two leaders, despite sporadic conflicts.

The difficult but essential role that the minority plays in guaranteeing accountability and spirited discussion during the legislative process was encapsulated in his thoughts.
