President, John Dramani Mahama, has been accused by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader in parliament, of disguising his dictatorial tendencies under democratic guises.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated that the protest was a constitutional obligation to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity during a demonstration spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday, May 5, against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension.

After the group petitioned Parliament, Afenyo-Markin spoke to the protesters and said: “We march today to resist the rise of a new oppressor and an oppressive regime. We march against the one who wears the cloth of democracy but governs with the spirit of dictatorship.”

He attacked President Mahama specifically, accusing him of consolidating power under the pretense of democratic administration.

The minority leader emphasized that a common concern for the rule of law and constitutional order, rather than politics, was what spurred the protest.

“We march not as partisans, but we march because the constitution demands it,” He went on to say that the current government is fostering an authoritarian mentality, and he urged all Ghanaians to acknowledge its seriousness.

During Monday’s demonstration, concerned people and allies of the opposition gathered to call for due process and transparency in the contentious Chief Justice suspension.

A comprehensive investigation of the situation and a return to the democratic values outlined in the 1992 Constitution were demanded in the petition that was presented to Parliament.
