Former President Akufo-Addo laments that J.B. Danquah’s name still sparks unnecessary debates in death as well as in life, with vile name-calling by ostensibly responsible members of society asking admirers of his accomplishments and ideology to uphold his legacy.
“In spite of the breath and death of Danquah’s contribution to the development of Ghana, his name continue to elicit needless controversies in death as in life. We recalled vividly the inhumane conditions Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP government attached to the conduct of his burial in 1965 after his cruel consolatory confinement in the dungeons of Nsawam Prisons.
“We are current witnesses 60 years after his death, the vicious name calling by would be responsible members of society those of us who love the works of this great champion of Ghanaian freedom and progress must take solace in this matter not just from benevolence of our God in heaven but also from philosophical Mr. Danquah claimed for himself in the cell of Sekondi Prison”, President Akufo Addo complained.
The deceased Dr. JB Danquah was praised by the former president for his significant contribution to Ghana’s progress.
The late JB Danquah was the embodiment of the rule of law and a supporter of democratic administration, which served as the cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy, according to former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
“JB Danquah’s persistent call for the rule of law to be entrenched in body politics is the utmost guarantee of liberty and individual freedom in this day are finally the central features of the Ghanaian politics” Akufo-Addo, the former president, said.
The late JB Danquah’s dream and aspiration for democratic administration and the rule of law have come true, Nana Akufo-Addo added, adding that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) still operates under his principle of “development in freedom,” which is the party’s motto.
Even though the late Dr. JB Danquah never held executive office, the former president added, his influence and impact were truly exceptional, affecting all facets of Ghanaian life, including constitutional, legal, philosophical, theological, economic, cultural, educational, and legislative.
He made this speech on Sunday at Kyebi during the launch of the compilation of statements honoring Dr. J. B. Danquah’s legacy on his 60th anniversary.
Speaking to the congregation, Okyenhene Osafogyefou Amoatia Ofori Panin talked about the importance of Dr. JB Danquah’s 60th anniversary and denounced what he described as willful ignorance, hatred, and mischief directed against the late Dr. Danquah.
With JB Danquah serving as convener, he urged the NPP to think about making Saltpon an important part of history and Tradition since it is the cradle of Ghana’s freedom and democracy.
Last but not least, Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament, lamented that no group of people has endured a hate campaign as a whole since the 1940s as JB Danquah and his descendants did.
