According to Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, a former General Secretary of the Ghana Christian Council, the Akufo-Addo administration has not shown a commitment to the battle against corruption.
He added that previous administrations had not demonstrated a commitment to combating corruption.
Despite the fact that more than 70% of Ghanaians identify as Christians, Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo Maafo recently warned the church about endemic corruption and illegal small-scale mining. Rev. Opuni Frimpong made the following observation: “Over the years, we are hearing reports from the public accounts committee and the Auditor-General and I daresay that the current government and past governments have not shown any seriousness about corruption fight.”
“They are all benefitting from it, especially when it affects their own”, Rev Frimpong alleged in an interview with Kwame Okyere Junior (KOJ) in an interview on Class91.3FM’s mid-day news, 12 Live on Wednesday, 23 August 2023.
He added, “We have cases where media and civil society organizations have raised issues. What you hear from the government is, “Bring evidence,” even though, in his opinion, the government has an entire state apparatus at its disposal, including the police and investigative bodies, to look into such exposés.
Being in a better position to deal with the threat, he found it perplexing that Mr. Osafo Maafo would prefer to confront the Church about the canker.
For instance, Rev. Opuni Frimoong expressed regret that Mr. Osafo Maafo “leaves cabinet meetings, comes to church and asks innocent church people to help you fight galamsey” despite the fact that he is aware that some members of his own party, the New Patriotic Party, have been exposed as participating in galamsey.
He asked the government to take lessons from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is using detoolment as a weapon against responsible chiefs to battle galamsey in his own backyard.
Asantehene, whose chiefs who were engaged in serial land sales and galamsey were deposed, is at least one recent example of how to combat corruption from Manhyia.
