President Akufo-Addo has conveyed his sincere condolences to the thousands of traders impacted by the tragic fire at Accra’s Kantamanto market.

On Thursday, January 2, 2025, the fire damaged more than 100 stores, leaving traders in a state of despair.

Known for its lively atmosphere and wide variety of merchandise, Kantamanto was swiftly consumed by fire.

As dealers, many of whom had staked their whole life savings, dug through the burned remnants of their stalls in an attempt to salvage anything of worth, the sight was one of heartbreak. As the terrible truth of the catastrophe sunk in, the air was heavy with smoke and the sound of wailing filled the air.

On Friday, January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo delivered his last State of the Nation Address in Parliament, expressing his deepest sympathies to the victims of the tragedy.

“I am deeply saddened by the devastating fire at Kantamanto market, the President said. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected and I extend heartfelt sympathies to the hardworking traders who have lost their goods and investments.”
