The New Patriotic Party (NPP) special electoral college result on Saturday, according to Nii Ayikoi Otoo, a member of the Alan Kyerematen campaign team, is not indicative of what will happen in the main election that takes place on November 4, 2023, when more than 200,000 delegates will choose the flagbearer.
On Monday (28 August), in response to the news, Otoo predicted that Kyerematen would pull off a surprise in the November elections.
“This prediction was made that it is likely that the Vice President [Bawumia] will get the big chunk of the results for now, looking at the complexion of the delegates, but it will not translate into what will happen when we bring in the huge number of people down there, who really will vote,” Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo stated.
“Can you say that these 900 people represent over 200,000 people, I doubt,” Otoo said. “So, we are confident that the grassroot, where majority of the voters are, when it comes to November, we are going to have a different result.”
According to the official results released by the Electoral Commission, Bawumia received 629 votes, or 68.15% of all valid votes cast across the 17 polling places, to win the race. Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central, finished in second with 132 votes (14.3%), followed by the former trade minister Kyerematen with 95 votes (10.29%).
With 36 votes (3.9%), the former agricultural minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto took the fourth place, followed by Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, who each received nine votes (0.98%), forcing a run-off for the fifth spot.
