The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has asked the government to permit headmasters and mistresses to buy supplies for their particular Senior High Schools, and former president John Dramani Mahama has backed this request.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for 2024 stated that such a step will assist in removing the “unnecessary hindrances” that prevent feeding in SHSs.

On October 12, Mr. Mahama posted about the situation on social media, claiming that it is in line with his promise to allow headmasters and mistresses to buy food for their students.

“I agree with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) that Senior High School management should be allowed to procure food items for their students.”

“This change in policy aligns with my stance, which I announced in Navrongo in November 2020. It will eliminate the unnecessary hindrances that hamper the feeding of SHS students in Ghana.”

The government has been urged by CHASS to permit headmasters and mistresses to buy supplies for their particular senior high schools.

The Conference lamented the difficulties they had working with vendors to get food into their schools.

This scenario prompted the President of CHASS, Reverend Steven Owusu Sekyere, to encourage the government to take notice while addressing the 61st National Annual Conference on Wednesday, October 11.

He claims that they are being treated unfairly by the suppliers and that they are suffering as a result.

“We are urging management to ensure a timely release of the entire funding for schools to make our work less stressful, and monies allocated for all activities must be increased significantly to meet the current market price of goods and services.”

He remarked, “This will assist in supplying our students with the necessary resources for their educational needs.”

The former president claims that this proposal is a step in the right direction.
