Five young people were injured in a stampede during a military recruiting screening exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, according to Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

The Minister expressed his sincere remorse for the event in a Facebook post and disclosed that he has ordered the injured to receive the best medical care available at state expense.

“I have since directed that they receive the best possible medical care and full support to ensure their speedy recovery,” In an effort to reassure the public and the impacted families of the government’s support, Dr. Amoakohene said.

This catastrophe at one of Ghana’s biggest stadiums comes after another tragedy at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, where six people were killed and injured in a stampede during a recruiting drive for the Ghana Armed Forces.

“We deeply regret this incident and remain committed to ensuring that all future recruitment and screening exercises are conducted in a safe, orderly, and humane manner,” the Minister said, acknowledging the crowd control failure.

He ended by offering the injured people and their families the government’s thoughts and prayers.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to suspend its ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise following reports of injuries and deaths recorded in Accra and Kumasi.
