Any of the 10 candidates for president from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will lead Ghana better than a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to renowned economist Kwame Pianim.

He thinks that if they are chosen to lead the party, the candidates will all be willing to make sacrifices and might significantly alter the course of the nation.

He cautioned the candidates against disparaging one another only to get cheap political points.

Mr. Pianim stated in an interview during the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News “We encourage all of them to sell themselves, and not to talk about other people. The party is not for personal aggrandizement of one person. Any of the NPP candidates, as far as we [elders] are concerned, will perform better in terms of our philosophy and our outlook of life than anybody from the other side [NDC]”.

He pleaded with his peers not to choose sides, stressing the need of the elders supporting each of the 10 contenders to prevent further escalation of internal strife.

Kwame Pianim, who was present at one of the candidates’ campaign launches, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, promised to be present at the launches of the other candidates, referring to them all as his children.

“I hope the founding members of the party and all the elders will support all the 10 people who are offering themselves as flagbearers. I was there to encourage Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, just like I’m encouraging all the others to come out and sacrifice to lead the nation. It’s not easy to be a flagbearer, these young people will go round the country and spread the message. They are the ones who are going to energise the people at the party base. Hopefully to give them confidence not to lose hope in the political system. It’s the only thing we have, to go and fight and preserve the democratic dispensation, free press, civil liberties that we want at a hard cost to a lot of people.”

All ten candidates for the special Electoral College election have been approved by the vetting committee of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Joe Ghartey, and Francis Addai-Nimoh are among the candidates who have been declared successful.

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a press release announcing that the National Council of the party would be debating the recommendations of the Vetting Committee on July 20, 2023.

All 10 candidates have now been approved by the party’s eligibility requirements and are qualified to run in the special Electoral College election.

The committee’s recommendations will be examined by the National Council before a decision is made regarding the party’s nominee for the forthcoming election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold a special delegates conference on August 26, 2023 to choose the five candidates who will compete in the presidential primary on November 4, 2023.

According to the game’s regulations, the party will hold a special electoral college to choose five candidates for the final round if more than five candidates meet the requirements to run.

The party expects to hold the special delegates’ conference on August 26 where the special electoral college, made up of roughly 900 delegates, will convene to cast their votes to choose the five candidates if more than five hopefuls make it through to the battle.
