Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s campaign team has refuted assertions made by former president John Dramani Mahama that he is the only prospective candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who can unseat the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.

Former President Mahama recently stated, while on a nationwide campaign trip, that he is the only candidate the NPP is terrified of facing in the upcoming general election, which is why he is running for president of the NDC a fourth time in the 2024 elections.

The Dr. Kwabena Duffuor campaign contends that the facts, electoral data, and trending analysis paint a different picture.

Apau-Wiredu Lateef, a supporter of Dr. Duffuor, claimed in a radio interview that the failure of the incumbent NPP to govern is the main reason why the opposition NDC will win in 2024 and that this will not alter even if the presidential candidate changes.

“The NDC has become more attractive to Ghanaians due to the failures of the NPP government. The NDC brand has become more attractive to Ghanaians and anyone on the NDC ticket is capable of winning power but we want someone who can attract floating voters with their track record to give us sweet victory.”

“Someone like Dr. Kwabena Duffuor who has privately employed so many Ghanaians in his several companies for over fourty years, many of who will vote for NDC because of him,” he said.

Apau-Wiredu Lateef questioned the validity of the claim that only John Mahama can win power for the NDC in 2024.

“If John Mahama is saying that no other candidate can win power for the NDC in 2024, is he saying that the NPP government would not have failed Ghanaians if the NDC had a new Presidential candidate in 2024?

This is similar to what John Mahama stated in 2020 when he said he was the party’s best bet, the speaker continued. In 2020, however, it is evident that voters cast “skirt and blouse” ballots, since John Mahama lost out in around 118 constituencies to NDC parliamentary candidates. Why did the presidential election not require a runoff in 2020 while we had a hung parliament?

In order to reaffirm his claim, he said that Mr. John Mahama’s prior election record and Ghanaians’ voting behavior plainly demonstrate that he is the NDC’s weakest link in terms of the party’s chances of taking power in 2024.
