Asante Kotoko has strongly denounced the increasing violence in the Ghana Premier League following the untimely death of Francis Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley), one of its fans. After Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC on Sunday, February 2, 2025, a violent argument broke out, and the loyal fan died from injuries he had incurred. Media representatives and fans who came from Kumasi to support the squad were attacked following the game at Nana Konamansah Park, the club said in an official statement.
Following a close 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko by Nsoatreman FC in a heated Week 19 match, the violence started.
After the final whistle, players battled on the field, escalating tensions and laying the groundwork for the ensuing violence. The crisis rapidly worsened, resulting in clashes between opposing factions and concerning degrees of violence.
According to eyewitnesses, the chaos escalated when onlookers, who were purportedly Nsoatreman FC supporters, started hurling objects at the Kotoko bench. In the midst of all of this chaos, Polley suffered serious injuries during the altercation and eventually died while being treated at a nearby hospital—a tragic conclusion that has horrified the football community.
Asante Kotoko has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and law enforcement to act swiftly and forcefully against the perpetrators of the violence in light of these developments.
To protect the safety of players, officials, and spectators alike, the club underlined the critical need for stronger security measures at game locations. In addition to demanding justice, the call for action also demands that Ghanaian football’s integrity be preserved.
It is anticipated that authorities would strengthen security during league games and begin in-depth investigations to apprehend the offenders. Polley’s tragic death serves as a sobering reminder of how vital it is to confront violence in sports. It is hoped that by taking these steps, further tragedies can be avoided and the game’s spirit and passion will be preserved.
