After three years of a legal struggle over a variety of allegations, including perjury, Gyakye Quayson, the embattled Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, has been cleared and dismissed by the criminal jurisdiction of the Accra High Court, which is presided over by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh.
The MP, who turned down the new Attorney General’s offer to drop the 2022 case against him, is now free since the judge felt that the prosecution had not presented enough evidence against him.
Until today, Quayson had been in court defending himself against charges of deceit of public office, forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office. He re-contested and won the Assin North parliamentary seat after his name was expunged from the house of legislature in 2023 after a Supreme Court ruling that discredited him from running in the 2020 elections.
If the prosecution had shown sufficient evidence to back up the charges, the MP would have been forced to present his defense.
This case was a component of the substantive case against him since he held dual citizenship and proceeded to run for MP without promptly renouncing his citizenship as required by the constitution.
Mr. Quayson called the acquittal a victory for justice and his constituents in an interview with media following the decision.
“This is justice for Assin North, and justice for Ghana. This is justice for everybody,” he stated.
He praised lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh for her fairness, stating,
“They were trying to prosecute me but this is a court of law. There is a difference between prosecution and persecution. I am very proud of our lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh. I was going to tell her in the courtroom but the rules don’t allow that. She is a very decent human being, more blessings for her,” he said.
Mr. Quayson maintained his confidence throughout the trial, claiming that attempts were made to convict him using “falsified documents” and that the prosecution was politically motivated.
