In the Central Region’s Awutu Senya East Constituency, occupants of a V8 vehicle opened fire during Saturday’s polling, leaving one person dead and another badly injured.
Both the deceased and the injured person are thought to be National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, according to information obtained.
The altercation reportedly happened after Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, purportedly declared herself the victor of the legislative elections.
According to reports, after witnessing the vote counting and collation exercise, unidentified attackers followed her and started shooting as they were leaving for home.
Since then, sources from the Ghana Police Service have verified that the victims were Phillis Naa Koryor supporters.
Eye Witness claimed to have seen a V8 car parked close to the center that belonged to Mavis Hawa Koomson, the current Member of Parliament.
Madam Okunor asserted that among the people inside the car were people she had named who attempted to kill her during the Kasoa elections in 2020.
One of my guys had been shot by them after they had pursued me. It’s not calm, and one guy is dead. A dead body is on the ground; someone was murdered by Hawa Koomson. She claimed that she wanted to kill someone and end my life.
“I know it because I know her car,” she said in response to a question about how she recognized the car and its passengers. I also know the boys. Kasoa is not the first time the boys have visited. They have already visited Kasoa; in 2020, they were the first to attack me there.
“I am not safe right now,” Madam Okunor said, expressing her profound anxiety for her safety and her family’s welfare. The lives of my family members and myself are in jeopardy.
She claimed that although she had reported the event to the Ghana Police Service, nothing had been done as of yet.
According to the NDC parliamentary candidate, one person has died and another is seriously hurt and in critical condition.
Due to similar violent episodes during previous election events, that constituency is considered as a hotspot.
Following a similar gunshot incident that claimed one life in the Northern Region’s Tolon Constituency, this will be the second death in Ghana’s election. Four suspects in the incident have already been taken into custody by the police.
