The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Mr. Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency in preparation for the March 3 by-election, after the party’s internal primary conducted on February 7, 2026.
Preliminary results disclosed after the polls concluded indicated that Mr. Jamal, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, attained 431 votes out of the overall ballots cast.
Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late MP Mr. Naser Toure, trailed him closely with 399 votes. Mr. Mohammed Ramne, the Chairman of the NDC Constituency in Ayawaso East, secured third place with 88 votes.
Dr. Yakubu Azindow received 45 votes, whereas Mr. Najib Mohammed Sani garnered one vote.
The fiercely competitive primary drew over 1,100 authorized delegates from throughout the constituency, highlighting the significant stakes in choosing a candidate for the by-election in a seat often considered a bastion of the ruling NDC.
Five candidates contested in the race, they were Hajia Amina Adam, Mr Baba Jamal, Dr Yakubu Azindow, who had previously contested the late MP in the 2023 primary, Mr Mohammed Ramne and Mr Mohammed Sani.
Even though the race was first seen as open, it subsequently became a close competition between Mr. Jamal, Hajia Amina Adam, and Dr. Azindow.
The election, nonetheless, was tainted by dispute. Reports surfaced a day prior to the elections and on voting day regarding alleged bribery and vote buying, with allegations that certain delegates received television sets, cash, and motorbikes in return for their vote.
