The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has officially announced that Tuesday, March 3, 2026, will be the date for a by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
The by-election comes after the tragic passing of the constituency’s MP, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, leaving the position unoccupied.
In a press statement from January 16, 2026, the Commission detailed the procedure and timeline for potential candidates. As stated in the announcement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman for Operations, nominations will be accepted at the EC Ayawaso East Municipal Office in North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Prospective candidates may obtain nomination forms from the EC’s official site, www.ec.gov.gh/forms, starting Friday, January 16, 2026. The finished forms must be submitted in four copies, either in person by the candidate or by their proposer or seconder, during the designated nomination period.
Candidates must have their forms endorsed by a proposer and seconder, who are both registered voters in the constituency, along with the backing of eighteen additional registered voters from Ayawaso East.
Every applicant is required to provide two recent bust-sized photos set against a red backdrop and to pay a non-refundable application fee. The charge is established at GH¢10,000 for general applicants, while a lower fee of GH¢7,500 applies to female candidates and individuals with disabilities (PWDs).
This by-election is being carried out pursuant to Article 112 (5) of the amended 1992 Constitution, which requires the EC to conduct an election to address a parliamentary vacancy.
The Commission has called on the public to be informed as it gets ready to manage a free, fair, and transparent election process.
