Labor unions have issued a threat to cease operations in the event that the government fails to take firm action against illicit small-scale mining.
For this demand to be fulfilled, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has set a deadline of the end of September.
The group called for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in areas affected by galamsey, the suspension of all mining activities in forest reserves, the establishment of special courts to try offenders, and the use of the military to remove mining equipment in a statement released by the TUC Secretary General.
The government’s inaction was held accountable by the Congress for the extensive environmental damage.
